Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Haystack-Blomquist Hastings Reservation 21 Jan start 0900 granary census on bark. 0955, nobody yet in granary, but I spot ♂173 and ♀484 camped out sapsucking or/blk light/blk in a Valley oak NNW of the granary, ♂173 or/m, ♀484 light/blk Looks unpromising for ♂576. Possibly some 1800 birds in the nest tree area, others on top of Haystack, in the many-holed Valley oak, Etc. Doesn't look seriously like a nest anytime soon. ♂173 flew away from the ♀ for one long period, ♀484 did chase two bluebirds away from a cavity in the multi-holed tree in a vertical broken stub in the center of the tree (hole faces granary) 1 High flying Coopers Hawk. End 1030. 24 April Introduced egg (from Plaque birds) into nest hole here, after Mary reported interest in this hole. I also stay around to try to get a picture, but nothing results. Birds (both ♂+♀) came to the hole a lot for a constant war with a pair
