1981 R.C. numme
Melanerpes formicivorus
1800
1 Sept I'm fairly certain that both J695 + J696 are in full blown
♂ plumage. Geez, isn't anybody going to produce ♀ this
year? Interesting, we have almost all ♂ juveniles this year.
30 Sept Watching, 1400. Granary census on back.
1500, giving up. Couldn't see birds well at all today. Only
♂561 yellow/Bik seen at all well, and I watched him store
3 Blue Oak acorns in the hour I watched. Birds also
showed a bit of interest in the 81 nest hole and the "Short stub"
roost hole, but I don't think it means nest.
Whoa, walking out at 1500, I find a ♂ looking out of the
"short stub" hole. What's more, he doesn't flush until I climb
halfway up the tree. No "baby" noises. Will have to check
1 Oct Watching from Pearson Field 0850, I find a bird in the 1981
nest hole and ♀193 at the hole looking in. Most peculiar.
Both leave 0904. 0930, Nothing more, I guess these birds were
just fooling around.
15 Oct Trying again, 1400 granary census on back. 1530, Another waste
of time. No storing, nothing. Will lump with the 1 hr
from 30 Sept, and try in the morning sometime.
17 Oct ♂561, ♀564 and J695 all at Y. J695 is actually
a definite ♀ (I goofed).
29 Oct Trying again, 1115. Granary census on back. Yesterday, ♂564
and ♀695 were at Y, but ♂564 is back here today. 1300,
almost a complete census: ♂347, ♂476, ♀193, ♂561, ♂562, ♀564,
♀695 all seen well. ⚠️ Only ♂/♀ (J) 696, who was at
Y on 19 Oct, not seen. Some storing activity, too.
1 Nov Granary census again, on back at D. 10,
