1931 R.C. rumme
melanerpes formicivorus
1800
(7 May) to peck hard at the head of ♂561. Then ♂476 hitched
up the branch, and I'm fairly sure (not positive) that
he gave ♂347 a quick peck to the head. I definitely
saw ♂347's head turned away in the usual subordinate
manner.
On toward roosting, I saw a pair of good ♂-♂
copulations. On one, ♂347 lightly mounted ♂476, then
♂476 gave him a good, 4-5 sec tail twist "copulation".
Saw the same sort of thing a bit later, but I couldn't
see who initiated. At roosting, the "packing" by the
core 3 was extreme. Very tight, but I couldn't see any
evidence of mounting of the ♀, dominance, etc.
9 May a peep-in hole check at 1145. 4 eggs, so ♀193
laid both yesterday and today. A ♀ (presumed ♀193)
was in the hole when I arrived.
10 May Hole check 1700. 4 eggs, so clutch complete as of
9 May. Expected Hatching: 20-21 May. Hole
Opened, eggs measured.
① [illegible] 24.1 x 19.5
② 23.4 x 18.7 (failed to hatch)
③ Fucked up 24.3 x 19.5. Air cell in middle of
egg, weird calcium chip on surface of egg over the air cell
④ 24.0 x 19.0 (Freshest looking, probably last laid)
→ Roosting, pretty sure it was ♂476 alone. A 2nd
bird ♀ looked in 'till quite late, but then flew off
18 May Roosting again. Pretty sure it was ♂476 alone. I think
I saw Black, or definitely no metal on the left leg.
