Melanerpes formicivorus
3
1800
28 April Start 1500. ♂♂ very tightly following ♀ 193. Also saw
a nice mounting between ♂478 + ♂347, about 1625.
No aggression, pecking, etc. as they mounted each other briefly
(< 1sec). Couldn't catch who mounted who first. Occurred
on horizontal branch or very top of granary. Complete
census: ♂561, ♂562, ♂564, ♀565 all seen quite
well. 1700, another ♂♂ mounting. After flying back to the
granary, the 2 ♂ loaded next to each other on horizontal
branch near the top of tiny granary. ♂478 made a feeble
attempt to mount ♂347, but did little more than to
"rubbing". ♂347 then fully mounted (for about 1sec) ♂473.
No pecking or aggression. End 1710.
29 April Start 1645, 1735, wow, a real copulation, between
the two ♂♂, ♂478 + ♂347. The core 3 flew
out of the sap tree, to the granary. ♂347 + ♂473 loaded
together on a horizontal limb. ♂478 then mounted
♂347 briefly, then ♂347 gave ♂478 what appeared
to be a full-fledged copulation; Bizarre. Good
cloacal contact 4-5sec duration, tail twist. Talk
about kinky sex. I've seen a couple of other ♂-♂
mounting today, but nothing like that. 1900, ♂478
"gets screwed" by ♂347 in the same circumstances,
Very strange.
1810. Another ♂-♂ copulation. This time ♂476 initiated
by flying to the side of ♂347. 347 mounted briefly, the
476 "copulated" with 347, although it was of less duration
(about 2 seconds) than the previous. ♂1842 ditto
