1981 R.L. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus 1500 22Aug A quick pass here 1230, only ♂297 or /yellow-Dgreen-ad L6rn/Yellow in evidence. See Blom1 notes from 20 Aug. 1Sept Looking here 1600. It looks like 4 birds are around now. L6rn/Yellow Definitely ♀601 metal/white-green, ♂297 or/yellow-Dgreen and J676, starting to look very much like a ♂ (DBlue-wht/Bix-wht) also, the 4th bird may have been J675 Grn-wht/Dan 14Sept I see 4 birds in the BlueOak knoll tree, one of which was DBlue-wht/Blk-white which was at the Blom cattle pond moments earlier. 0806. Also at the Blomone knoll, → J677 m/DBlue-yellow (N) in ♂ plumage! 30Sept Watch r granary census here, 1100-1300 data on reverse, Well, more changes. ♂297 + ♀601 here all right, but ♂622 Bix-O/Bix seen at Blom1 on 14 Sept, is back here at 1500! So indeed are Juvs ♂677 m/DBlue-yellow (N) and Juvs 675 DBlue-wht/Bix-wht both apparently starting to molt into ♀ plumage! Maybe I've been jumping the gun about sexing juvs this year. Storing has begun! I saw ♂622 store 3 acorns, but no one else. Obviously, not in earnest yet. There seems to be a bit of intergroup tension, but for the most part ♀601 looks remarkably tolerant of the 2 ♀ (?) Juvis. All 3 were seen on a branch together, and though I did see ♀601 give one of the 2 Juvs a mild peck, it certainly didn't look serious This means only Juv 678 not accounted for. Is he dead, or still hanging around Blomone or Blom2
