Melanerpes formicivorus
2
1500 Hastings Reservation
11 April I swing by here at 1400, and I find ♂297 and 2 other
♂♂ in the tree (Valley Oak) closest to the tree
house tree. The other 2 males fly off, but
♂297 continues to work some food item for ½ hour,
When he moves it, I see that it's a [illegible] Sceloporus
lizard! How about that! End 1425. Can't find
anybody else, but since ♂297 is not near the ♀ and
seems unconcerned about anything at the moment, I'd
guess that nesting is not imminent.
25 April Two weeks later, nesting is pretty darn imminent.
At 1715 I flush a bird out of the low hole in the 2°
(1979 granary (1979 nest)), and discover leggy (after
going back to get the small stepladder). Egg marked #1
and returned. Presumably laid today. Will have to
get the egg-laying behavior tomorrow.
26 April Nest check 0930. A 2nd egg, laid this morning, marked #2
and returned.
Starting watch 0950 Good watch. ♂297 not following
♀435 in the least; Just what I'd hoped. ♀623 is
also here, but not the 3 ♂♂ who have just moved
to Blomone. ♂297 was in the nest hole for a few
minutes. End 1215
27 April Start 0655. Nobody around. 0720, ♀509 (corn-Orn/Yellow
from Gazebo, in the Blue Oak. Mildly supplanted by ♀435. ♂297,
in granary, showed no response. 0755, ♀435 leaves nest, probably
in nest laying. Other intruders seen here as well.
End 0920.
