1981 R.C. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Y (30 Nov) and carrying them to the nearby sycamore. Shortly thereafter, 5 birds (3 1800 birds 2 ♀NB ?) flew up o-to the side of SHILL, on the N rim of the roast hole canyon. I wish I knew what these guys were up to. At the Y proper; I spot a ♀NB, and ♂402 (of course). Can't wait to see what he finally does. 9 Dec Running 2 lett Mist nets, watching here 1100-1300. 4 Birds seen at Y: 2 ♀NB, ♀668 (back!) and ♂669. ♀668 stored 1-2 acorns, and looked quite comfortable here. The 4 birds seemed to be he constantly during the 4 hours I watched, even though ♂669 was on SHILL yesterday. No Sign of ♂402, and no mist net success. As for the "knoll set," there seem to be a bit of activity up here early, but from 12-1 I heard not a peep from the knoll, nor did I see any birds. 15 Dec Running nets 0730, and watching. At the Y Proper I see ♂402 (storing an acorn!), ♂669, and 2 ♀NB. By 0820, still no sign of ♀668. As for the "knoll set", ♂564 and ♀NB, with at least 1 and perhaps two other [illegible] birds around. Also, ♂660 of Plaque intruded at knoll set, and was shagged out by the "residents" (♂564 I think)
