1991 R.L. Mumme Melanerpes Formicivorus Y (20 Nov) And the 2 RNB. What's more, ♂402 was here from 0930-1000, storing acorns! However, at 1015 or so I saw a bird make a continuous flight from the locusts to School Hill Field, and when I watched the locusts again, ♂402 was absent while the other 4 birds were still actively storing acorns. Many acorns are now most acorns harvested from the very visible i- the granary, big corner live oak. Meanwhile, on the Knoll, we have ♂564 of 1800, along with two unbanded ♀♀, most certainly separate from the Y birds. In fact, there are two stored acorns in the fallen tree on the Knoll, and I saw these 3 birds poking around with acorns at several other spots on the knoll. Also, ♂564, at least one of the UBG's were excavating a hole just below the east-facing blue oak hole on the Knoll. Could we have a new group forming up here? If so, the temptation to call them the "knoll Set" might be irresistible. I'll have to keep an eye on things here. 23Nov 9695 M/Mauve back with ♂564 and the 2 RNB in the Knoll area, 0930. At 1100, after seeing ♂402 at School Hill (Storing acorns), I find him back at Y, storing acorns! talk about bet-hedging! see SHill notes for this date. 30Nov The "knoll set" is still going strong: 0930, ♂564, 9695, and (a new addition) ♂562 all hanging around the fence line Valley Oak, with at least one ♀NB. At 1000, they were harvesting acorns from the Y live oak loaded with acorns,
