Dale Dry Lake, San Bernardino Co., Calif.
Walt Moberly, Dave Reuther & I left
UCR at 0500 for our monthly sample.
We reached the collecting area at
0700 and immediately began to collect
animals. The weather was perfect
today for catching lizards - no wind
or overcast, not hot too early (didn't
reach 100°F until nearly 1100). We
quit walking for lizards at 1100, then
drove slowly along the road looking
for lizards from 1105 to 1140. By
then a SE wind had risen to 5-8mph.
We were able to capture 41 lizards
of 4 species, as follows:
Uma scoparia - 26 (12 ad Ø, 12 ad ♂) (2 imm released)
Diposaurus dorsalis - 10 (5 ad Ø, 2 ad ♂) (3 imm.
releasid)
Callisaurus draconoides - 2 (1 Ø, 1 ♂)
Urosaurus graciosa - 3 (2 Ø, 1 ♂)
Animals were not really abundant
today. Wind had removed nearly all
animal tracks - probably yesterday,
since only Dipodomys tracks and the
tracks of other nocturnal species
were all that could be seen when we
first arrived - so any activity today
should have been apparent. However, few
lizard tracks were seen during our
stay. We reached UCR at 1425
after a trip of 223 miles.
