Mayhew 1962 Journal Jan. 24 Glamis area, Imperial Co., Calif. listening for Scaphiopus couchi. Water was in S of the storm channels from the Chocolate Mts., somewhat similar to last Sept., but we heard no S. couchi. The air temp. at the time, however, was only about 6° C., like Harris, signal maintainer for the Southern Pacific Railroad that lives at Glamis, patrolled the tracks all the way northwest to Mammoth Wash without hearing any S. couchi. E.C. Van Der Pool measured 0.33 inch of rain at Glamis, which was 0.08 inch more than fell in Sept. To bring these toads out, Ike Harris told me he found a young S. couchi near his house last month (December) during a very warm spell (temps. in the 90's). This animal was in a puddle of water Ike had placed by a tree to irrigate it. Unfortunately, his dog killed the toad before Ike could rescue it. Ike arranged for us to spend the night in a vacant Southern Pacific Railroad section gang house at Glamis, so we were out of the rain. Jan. 25 We dug for S. couchi under some of the railroad ties without success. There just isn't any way to tell
