May 18-20 San Jacinto Mts., Riverside Co., Calif.
temperature reached 30° F during the
night. We looked for birds and
reptile up as high as Farview
Point (7720 ft elevation), then retraced
our route to highway R1. We stopped
at Indian Hill Road (½ mi. S. of Lake
Fulmor) to look for animals, but we
saw relatively few. However, the sky
was almost completely overcast and
a strong wind was blowing. We
made our next stop about 3 miles
south of Banning to look for
Xantusia henshawi. Then we returned
to UCR, arriving at 1625, after
a trip of 181 miles. We saw 62
species of vertebrates on the trip,
and captured 98 reptiles & amphibians
of 9 species.
The captured ones were:
Sceloporus occidentalis - 12
Sceloporus orcutti - 4
Sceloporus graciosus - 56 (43 ad, 13 juv.)
Uta stansburiana - 13
Xantusia henshawi - 8
Phrynosoma coronatum - 2
Cnemidophorus tigris - 1
Lampropeltis getulus - 1
Bufo boreas - 1
A large sample of Sceloporus

Hunsaker at San Diego State College.
