May 4
Stoddard Valley, San Bernardino Co., Calif.
I left UCR with the field zoology
class at 1330 and drove to Hesperia.
We looked for animals in the
Joshua tree woodland until nearly
dark, then headed for Stoddard Valley
by way of Lucerne Valley. We
might collected along the road from
the north end of Lucerne Valley to
our campsite. Only 1 adult ? Sceloprus
magister that had been hit by a car,
& 4 Crotalus cerastes were seen
on the road alive. A Masticophis
flagellum that contained a Cnemidophorus
tigris was found DOR. No mammal caught.

We arose at 0530 and ate tonight's
breakfast. Then we scoured the
countryside for animals until about
1100. The class found far more
animals than I had expected them
to locate. In all, 17 Zophorus
agassizi were found at this location,
along with numerous lizards, &
1 Salvadora hexalepis (also some more
[3] Crotalus cerastes). After lunch
we looked for Salermalus obseua
and Crotaphytus collaris in the
rocky area south of our campsite.
Then we left this area, and
headed for Dale Dry Lake, which
