April 21
Blue Ridge, Los Angeles Co., Calif.
Walt Moberly & I left UCR at 1205
for a 3-day collecting trip. We reached
Blue Ridge & began looking for lizards at
1330. The air was quite cool (12.5 °C), but
several lizards were out. By 1710, when
we quit looking, we had captured 12
Sceloporus graciosus (7♂, 5♀), 5 of Sceloporus
occidentalis, & 3 Uta stansburiana (2♂, 1♀).
Several others, particularly S. graciosus,
were seen but not captured. We left
Blue Ridge & headed for Lovejoy Buttes.
Lovejoy Buttes, Los Angeles Co., Calif.
We reached the Lovejoy Buttes area about
1930. We couldn't find the spot I had
planned to camp in, so we spent the night
at Joshua Tree State Park.
April 22
We arose at 0630 and ate breakfast. We
began looking for Sceloporus magister along
the road west of the buttes at 0830. We
saw the first S. magister at 0925 (air temp.
at that time - 21.5 °C). Except for 20 minutes
spent eating lunch (1410-1430), we were
driving along the road between Lovejoy &
Saddleback Buttes looking for lizards
until 1825 (sundown about 1827). During
that period we caught 2 Phrynosoma
platyrhinos, 2 Uta stansburiana, and 23
Sceloporus magister (4♂♀, 18♂♀, 1 imm. ♂).
I don't know where all the ♀ were hiding.
We didn't even see any ♀ until fairly
Several
came snow
piles at edge
of road.
