May 3 Mojave Desert, San Bernardino Co., Calif.
I left UCR at 1300 with the
field zoology class for the high
desert trip. We spent most of
the afternoon looking for animals
in the Joshua tree woodland
habitat in Hesperia. Then we
drove to our campsite at Stoddard
Valley before sunset. Bob Glaser
took one carload of students for
night collecting, but they were
unsuccessful in locating any
reptiles.
May 4 After breakfast we spread out over
the alluvial fan, looking for any
sort of reptile, but especially for
Gopherus agassizi. Only 3 live
gophera were seen this year, compared
to 17 last year. Lots of skeletons
(about 12) were found this year, however,
indicating the long drought is
producing more casualties among
the tortoises, as well as the
other reptiles. We looked for
Sauromalus obesus and Cristophytua
collaris on the rocky slopes
during the afternoon. Only 2
Sauromalus and no Cristophytua
were seen. Then we drove to
the Pisgah lava flow east
