San Jacinto Mts., Riverside Co., Calif.
Eric (Ted) Pengelley, Valerie Ernst,
Herta Taylor, Shirley Hill, Dennis
Miller & I went after a sample of
Sceloporus graciosa. We left UCR
at 1010. We looked for lizards on
and near our lots at Pink Cove.
Two adults (o?) + several young were
cought there. Then we drove 2 miles
north to the entrance road to
Fern Basin campground. Here we
caught a number of S. graciosa
as well as 3 S. occidentalis and
1 Uta stansburiana. Patches of snow
were still on the ground at both
sites. The air temp. maximum today
at these locations was 14.0°C. There
was no wind + no clouds. For some
reason, no adult females were seen
today, & only 5 young females were caught.
In addition, 15 adult males + 9 young
males were captured (S. graciosa).
Also, 3 adult male S. occidentalis and
1 adult ? Uta stansburiana were caught.
In all, 34 lizards of 3 species were
captured between 1230 and 1600. Winter
is still in the air in this locality,
so lizards aren't nearly as plentiful
as they will be later. We returned to
UCR at 1720 after a trip of 109 miles.
