11.
April 7 Glamis area, Imperial Co., Calif.
The sky remained overcast until 1530,
when more blue sky began to emerge.
Four of the animals were found by
tracking during the late afternoon.
At 1945 we began night collecting.
We made one round trip between the
canals (14 miles) by 2055. We
caught 6 Colonyx variegatus &
found 1 DOR. One Crotalus cerastes
had just been run over before
we reached it; No other animals
were seen (except one Lepus
cali.). We drove 95 miles
today.
April 8 We arose at 0545 and ate breakfast.
We looked for Phrynosoma m'calli between
the canals from 0640 to 1110 without
seeing a live one. The temp. didn't warm
up enough until 0800 or 0830, but by that
time the wind was blowing about 10-15mph.
Apparently that is enough wind to keep
them under the sand, because we saw
no signs of them or their tracks on the
sand. We slept under the bridge across
the Coachella Canal during the early
afternoon, hoping the wind would die
down enough for P. m'calli to come out.
As the wind velocity didn't diminish,
we went into the dunes at 1600 to
