Mayhew 1962 Journal 6. Feb. 21 Palm Springs area, Riverside Co., Calif. Walt Moberly, Bill Threadell and I left UCR at 0915. We reached Grandaddy Dune at 1030. The sand was quite damp from the last rain - there were puddles of water standing in some places. The soil was wet at least 8" down. The air temperature was cool (13°C), even in the sun. No trace of any animals were seen - not even tracks. Winter is still present here, although a few annuals were in bloom (Dithyrea, Abronia, Gersea, Astragalus), as well as a few blossoms on Larrea divaricata. The same situation prevailed at Palm Springs Panorama. They are spraying tremendous quantities of water on newly-planted grass, so everything looks green. However, no animals were seen. We learned today that residential lots begin at $4,000, houses on lots range from $18,000 to $31,500. We returned to UCR at 1400. Mar. 14 Glamis area, Imperial Co., Calif. Dr. Tracy I. Storey, Lloyd Davis and I drove out to see the Scaphiopus couchi habitat we found last September. Even though winter still has that region in its grip, those washes looked very gloomy and forbidding for any amphibian.
