The corner of Milliken and Highway 60 is approximately 15 miles from the UCR campus. The road is freeway, or at least divided 4-lane, so it requires only about 15 minutes to reach the area. I returned to UCR at 1645 after driving 100 miles.
I plan to release Uma scoparia on dune #2, U. inornata on dune #4 & U. notata on dune #3. All three species will be released on dune #1. Dunes 3 & 4 have a series of dunes lying between, so I want to see if either of these species will spread to the original location of the other. I'm curious to see what will happen if they do come together under these circumstances. All animals will be marked (toe-clipped) & released at a given point in each dune. Then the rate of spread through the habitat can be determined by recapture. Dune #1 will be used to see if competition of these species in a given location will eliminate any. The other dunes will have only one species present, which will be used primarily as a check to be sure the species can survive under these rather artificial (for them) conditions.
