Mayhew 1962 Journal 5. Jan. 26 Desert Center area, Riverside Co., Calif. Stillingia Plantago Dalia mollis and Astragalus sp. were also present, but not in bloom. Dale Dry Lake apparently was missed by the last storm. The top 3 or 4 inches of sand were totally dry. Then there was a moist layer about 6 inches thick before dry sand again. We saw no sign of annuols there. Joshua Tree Nat'l. Monument also appeared to be quite dry at this time. We reached UCR at 1650 after a trip of 575 miles. Jan. 29 Lovejoy Butte area, Los Angeles Co., Calif. Walt Moberly, Donna Hobbs, Yair Cassuto & I left UCR at 0915 to check conditions at my Sceloporus magister collecting site. Snow was still on the ground in spots around Phelan. However, Yair was able to see 2 Citellus leucurus active today. No reptiles were seen. The collecting area hasn't changed appreciably since I last saw it. I think we should be able to get a reasonable sample there this year. We returned to UCR at 1400 after driving 161 miles.
