1995 1996 Walker D Koenig Melanerpes fomticivorus Lower Haystack HNHR 12 April 1500. Bird in hole in granany! Checked: 6 eggs, incubated. Granany here has a fair number of stores still, although once again, not as many as one might have expected. Tree is perhaps ½ full, no more. 17 April Joey checked today, and found 7 eggs!!! What happened? Could I have missed the 7th? He claimed none were runts (none of the 6 seemed so to me...). Hmm. Strange. 8 June 1200. Bird in (sawn) hole! Checked it: 8 eggs. First of any 2nd nests this year (and maybe the only one!) 13 June 1400. Still 8 eggs, incubated. Measured one: 25.2 x 20.5. Plenty of stores here. 20 June 1550. Checked nest: 6 kids, no eggs; 1 kid a runt no doubt on his way out. I weighed one of the other 5: 13.9 gms, making him probably 3 days old. (Band 8 July). 1996 5 January 1415. Counted stores: Main tree: 925? 925. 2nd tree: 0 Pretty pathetic for this group, but it's still about the best going so far! 10 April Some stores remaining here. But not a lot. 19 April 1535. Noone in any holes. Looks like a new one over by the saddle, however. 13 May 930. At least 3 birds here, but noone in any holes. 14 May 900. Checked the traditional hole (Joey had seen a bird in it earlier), but it's empty. 23 May 1400. 4 eggs, not hatched yet.
