1993 1994 Walter Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Lower Haystack HNHR 29 January Counted stores: Main tree: 1814? 2184 2° tree: 370) Not particularly impressive for this group. Granary, in fact, is only haphazardly stuffed with acorns, certainly not more than ½ filled. What's going on up here? 3 April 1100. Acorns remaining here- lots. 24 April 1430. Bird in traditional hole in the granary. Checked it: 6 fresh eggs, 4 of which are regular, 1 of which is quite small but still normal, and 1 of which is a definite runt. 27 April 1400. Bird in hole: still 6 eggs including the runt. Eggs warm. 25 May 1500. Banded & bled the 4 babies here. 9 July Stores remaining (plenty) 1994 20 January 1100. Counted stores: HNHR.
