1998 1999 Walt D Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Knoll HNIHR 8 May 1400. Opened new hole in locust closest to Talos. 4 eggs, incubated. Measured 1: 27.6 x 20.3. 16 May 1700. Checked the nest-empty! A real-live failure. Plenty of stores here; weather's been terrible, but everyone else seems OK. Late 1100. Bird in same hole: 2 hatchlings + 2 eggs, 1 of which is undeveloped. I took & measured it: 28.2 x 19.8. Band 21 June. 1999 11 May 1045. Bird in last year's hole: 5 eggs, fresh. Measured one: 26.0 x 20.0 mm. Stores: Yes. 19 May Checked hole: empty! Tagged #289. 14 June 1400. 2nd nest in same hole (#289). 3 babies, ~5 do, + 2 eggs (26.9 x 19.9, 27.5 x 20.3). Band ~ 2 July.
