1997 1998 Waltun D Koenig Melanerpes fomnicivorus Cavity 24 March 1530. Opened their hole in the Blue Oak just up from the lab: 3 fresh eggs. 25 March 1200. Checked the nest: still 3 eggs. Measured one: 25.2 x 19.8 mm. Also, σ 2563 was inside incubating when I checked it. (He didn't flush!) 2 April 1300. 3 young (1 do?) babies. All looked about the same size. 22 May 1300. Opened another new hole here in the Blue Oak: 2 fresh eggs. (2nd nest). 30 May 1100. Peeed the hole: 3 eggs. Should hatch about 4 June. 31 May 1500. Finally measured the eggs: ① 24.5 x 19.7 ② 24.7 x 19.7 ③ 23.1 x 17.8 10 June 920. Hole is empty. Nest failed. We filled up here, but I doubt that was it. 10 July Joey reports another nest in the 1st hole - fairly old babies!! 25 Aug There are still stored acorns in the locust here. 1998 28 April 1130. New hole! Opened it: 4 eggs, a couple days incubated. Measured all 4: ① 24.7 x 20.9 ② 25.5 x 21.4 ③ 25.6 x 20.2 ④ 22.1 x 17.6 10 May 1530. Babies have hatched! Watching now to try and get the ♀. Checked nest: 2 babies (≈3 do), + 1 unhatched egg. Band ≈ 28 May. ELED = 26 Apr. Seen in tree: 92333, 92139, 3 2563, 82749, 92740, 32751, 82430, 3 2750.
