1997 Walter D Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus School Hill H.N.H.B. 7 May 800. Checked the new hole above the exclosure, even through there wasn't anyone in it: zilch. 12 May 1300. Bird in the hole at last! 1315. Well, it's still empty, but at least I think I can be fairly confident that they will nest here. 16 May 900. Still nothing! This is becoming worrisome.... 22 May 1415. Well, we did miss the 1st nest - There are fledglings here. But at least I found the 2nd nest - it's in a new hole in Tree#2 facing into the exclosure. This is probably where the 1st nest was as well. There are now 3 eggs incubated: ① 25.2x20.0 ② 24.6x19.7 ③ 24.3x20.2 (egg#3 doesn't appear to be developing). Set ambush at the crummy hole. And yes, the nest is empty - operator error. 27 May 2000. A successful ambush tonight in the new hole above the exclosure: 3 NOBATA juvs! 4 July 1330. Banded the 2 kids in the 2nd nest (same hole), 2914-2915. 22 August In the process of setting ambushed (we apparently missed 1 or 2 more kids from the 1st nest) it turns out there's
