1993 1994 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Westgate HNHR 2 February 1630. Counted stores: 2290. Tree is quite full and hard to count. Birds are definitely doing well. 8 April Stores still remaining here. 13 May 1300. Banded & bled the 6 babies here (2 from the aviary). Stores still present. 1994 20 January 1510. Counted stores: 2610. Also, Jen & Wendy claim that this group has taken over the Gate granary, which has 575 acorns. Tree is still very difficult to count. 10 May 1300. Bird in new hole high in Sycamore (previously opened by Stanback): 8 eggs, all normal and pretty fresh. I numbered them but didn't measure them. Plenty of stores here still. 30 May 1400. 6 healthy babies here, even though there's apparently no breeder & (Who was DOR about the time the eggs were laid)! ① LG (53.3) ② Yd (56.3) ③ LB (55.0) ④ Or (51.2) ⑤ DB (53.3) ⑥ NOBA (48.2). This is ~ day 13, which means banding should be ~ 7 June and LED was ~ 6 May. 31 May 1000. Also 2 NOBAs, which I'm now trying to catch. 1030. 914(5, ♀) 1473 feeding. ③ 6 2028 also (♂p-DB/la) 1100. Got one of the 8's! 1135. Back to try for #2 for a bit. 1200. Got 6 #2! The heavy wear on the feathers of both birds is consistent with them being 2Y birds, but whether they are the (presumed) helpers we missed from the (apparent) second nest last year or new,
