1993 Walter D Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus MPHF HNHR 1 April Lots of stores still here; birds (roosting?) in at least 3 holes at 1630. 7 April MTS reported 2 birds in the good west hole yesterday, so I came and set things up this morning in hopes of an egg-tossing picture. 645. Hole empty. No birds hanging around, here or in the other nearby holes. 730. No apparent interest in holes, at least this morning. 9 April 650. Here again A bird in the vicinity, but hole is still empty. Watching. 715. 3 birds preening in the LPHF gramany appear to be from here: ①♂ DB Noh-Mv #1614; ②♀ Rat-Wt/D8 #1533. ③♂ M #1962. 4th bird here also; ④♂ Wh-Dk/Yellow #1613. 723. Bird just flew to trees across The road! 730. Birds are here, but showing no obvious interest in the holes yet. What's up with LPHF? No sign of them. All in all, things are sort of confusing here. 11 April 645. Trying here again. 700. ? M Red-DBlue ... ? in gramany eating dog food...! ②♂ Y-DG/Ycl #1613. ③♀ M/Ru #1533. 2nd ♀ here too. 712. 2nd ♀ just displaced (chased?) by one of the ♂♂ ... ? 715. Still not sure what's going on here (is ♀1531 still here even?) but they still are not interested in holes, best I can tell. 21 April 700. Wasn't able to get back here until today, when it was too late: 4 normal, fresh eggs in the hole, which I numbered 1-4. 16 June 935. Bird in upper (unopened!) hole in traditional tree. 2nd nest? 1115. Hole checked: 5 eggs, incubated (all normal).
