1993 Walter D Koenig 1994 Melanerpes formicivorus CV Gerande HNHR 10 July 900. Stores remaining here. 1994 11 April 1600. Checked nest: 5 eggs, still look fresh. I can just reach them. 14 April 845. Bird in hole. Went up and pulled the 5 eggs, moving them to the incubator in hopes of getting blood/tissue from them eventually. In the meantime, the idea is to make these guys re-nest, giving us a chance to do some mate-guarding watches and to temporarily remove one or both of the young ♂ breeders prior to re-nesting. Pretty clean Size of eggs: (1) 23.9 × 18.8 (2) 24.2 × 20.3 (3) 25.5 × 19.5 (4) 25.4 × 20.0 (5) 24.5 × 20.1 Note: there had been ♂ egg-tossing seen here prior to incubation! See Mark's or Jeremy's notes. 18 April Ambushed this morning, catching all 5 birds (♂1079 is gone). We removed [only] ♂2038, one of the 3 breeder ♂s here. (Note: the other young ♂, ♂2172, tossed 2 eggs [1 a nunt] from the 1st nest!) 20 April ♂2038 died last night. Pisser. 21 April Three birds, probably from here, in hole (mid-afternoon) over toward Gazebo. See Gazebo notes for details. 12 May 900. Watching. (1) ♀ 1m#2026. Note: we've had the 2nd sub. ♂ (♂2172) in captivity for over 2 weeks now [see MTS notes]. He was caught in one of the River Struggles that took place after the 18 April ambush. 20 May 930.
