1997 1998 Walton D Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Gazebo HNHR 3 April 1130. Cleaned a Starling nest (3 eggs) out of the traditional hole here. 8 April 1100. Bird apparently in a hole over in The Blue Oak on the other side of the pond. I pulled off a lot of the poison oak around the tree so it can be climbed next time. 10 April 1245. Bird in the hole across the pond again. Opened it: 7 eggs, fresh. Measured them: (1) 23.9 x 18.8 (2) 25.5 x 18.9 (3) 24.3 x 18.9 (4) 25.0 x 19.4 (5) 23.9 x 18.8 (6) 22.8 x 17.3 (7) 24.4 x 19.5. 12 June 1200. Checked up on the 2nd nest, which is hatching. They have 4 babies - one of which is dead already - and 2 eggs. (1) 24.0 x 18.9. Will probably end up with 3 kids here. 1998 25 April 1100. Opened the hole (same as 1st nest in 1997): 1 fresh (normal) egg. I bet they're egg-tossing. Lots of stores. I also cleaned out a Starling nest from the old nest hole in the central area. 29 April 1530. 5 eggs! Apparently they are not joint-nesting here. In any case, I took one of the eggs, which happened to measure 24.8 x 19.1 mm. (only 4 left). 11 May 1125. 3 hatchings + 4 infertile (or at least undeveloped) eggs. They were joint-nesting here after all, apparently. Bend: 1 June.
