1997 1998 Walter D Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Blomthree HNHR 30 March 1430. Bird in hole (old hole in traditional tree). Opened it: 1 egg, fresh: 24.5 x 17.4 mm. (May be more than one - I couldn't quite get to the bottom.) 2 April 1400. Bird in hole. 3 April 1145. Peeped The hole: 5 eggs, apparently incubated 8 April 1145. Still 5 eggs, incubated. 30 June 1615. 3 eggs, incubated (2nd nest). (1) 26.4 x 19.3 Still stores here. 9 July 1100. 2 babies, ~5 do. Still acorns here. Band ~25 July. 29 July 1400. Banded the 2 kids here (#2947-2948). Still stores. 1998 10 April The granary here fell during the winter storms. However, the birds still exist and have shifted at least some of their focus to Dark Hollow! 25 April Birds hanging out here. One seemed to fly out of last year's nest hole, so I checked it: I couldn't reach the bottom so I wasn't positive, but I'm pretty sure it's empty. Even though their granary is kaput, they actually have some stores here in the tree back a bit in the forest! 30 April 900. Bird in hole! 11 May 1145. 5 babies, ~3 days old (1 fading). Band ~29 May. 18 May 1345. Dead babies in nest. Exposure/abandoned.
