May 20 Mojave Desert, San Bernardino Co., Calif.
The field zoology class (6 members +
a visitor), Frank Aubrey & I left
UCR at 1145 and drove to Harperia.
After eating, we drove on to
Lucerne Valley, then north to the
Ond Mts. We checked a spring on
sec. 36, T 7 N, R 1 W, but it didn't look
at all good for our purposes. We
drove on to Stoddard Valley to our
campground 8 miles south of Barstow,
collecting reptiles along the way.
We reached the campsite at 1600. We
began looking for reptiles immediately.
a few Lata stansburiana were seen
but not caught. An adult of Crotalus
mitchelli was captured on the west-
facing slope of a hill about 150 yards
S.E. of the camp. We looked for
animals until 1715. We ate chow, then
started to night collect at 1915. We
looked for animals until 2230. A S.W.
wind of 10-15 mph. was blowing at our
campsite from the time we arrived
until we left. Animals seen today were:
Bullock's oriole
Mourning dove
House Sparrow
Robin
Killdeer
Red-winged blackbird
Crow
Raven
Horned Lark
Zoppelhead Shrike
Western meadowlark
Brevis blackbird
