Idyllwild Area, Riverside Co., Calif.
children in the area, so no traps had
to be checked this morning. 7 of rolled
in early, so we left the park at
0845 + drove to Marion Mt. camp-
ground. We hiked up the trail toward
the top of Marion Mt. about one mile,
looking for birds + Sceloporus
gracilis. On the way back to the
cars we found 3 Crotalus viridis
within 10 feet of each other on
a rocky outcrop near the trail.
We captured the largest one (4'6"½")
for the student collection, but the
other two escaped in the rocks.
The large one was in sight over
1/2 hour, however, because it took
me that long to make a round
trip to the car for the snake
collecting equipment. We hadn't
carried the gear along because we
thought it was too cold for
rattles to be active yet. When they
were sighted at 1130, air temp. (30")
was 9.5°C., air temp. (1cm) was 16°C.,
rock surface temp. was 32°C. We
returned to the cars, ate lunch,
then started for UCR 1330. We
reached UCR at 1445, after driving
66 miles today, + 203 miles on
the entire trip.
