Colorado Desert, Imperial Co., Calif.
After eating chow at the east end of the
pavement, we began night collecting toward
Elamio at 2000. A Hypsiglena torquata was
found slightly injured 11 mi. E. of Elamio, but
no other animals were seen (except rabbits)
until we were west of Elamio. We finally
caught 18 Coleonyx variegatus, but released
one obviously gravid ♀ when we decided we
had a large enough sample of ♀. No other
reptiles were seen alive, but 2 recently
squashed Crotalus cerastes were found. We
stopped for the night at 2315 on top of
Dune Crest Drive. We drove the car - all 221
miles today. The maximum temp. today was
105°F., the minimum temp. tonight was 74°F.

We arose at 0500 and ate breakfast. We
looked for lizards along the road from
0635 to 1110. We drove first to Elamio,
then back through the dunes and between
the 2 canals. We only had time to make
one pass through the area before it became
so hot the animals retreated underground.
Some Celligaurus draconoides were still active
when we left the area, but they were so
spooky we couldn't catch any. No Phrynosoma
calli were seen this morning, even though
we drove through the area we did so
well in last evening. It was getting quite
hot by the time we reached that area,
however. We left the entire area at 1120.
