Dale Dry Lake area, San Bernardino Co., Calif.
Frank Aubrey, Steven Peterson + I left
UCR for this collecting site at 0610. We
began looking for lizards beside the
road at 0815. At 0820 we found the
first active lizard (Cnemidophorus tigris).
We stopped periodically along the
way to capture lizards that were
seen from the car. I have never
seen so many Dipsoaurus dorsalis
in this area before, nor have I
ever seen them active this early
before. We finally reached our usual
collecting site at 1030, just as
the wind began to blow. It blew
the remainder of the day. An adult
Crotalus cerastes was seen under a
Larrea divicicata at 1035. It was
collected for its reproductive organs.
We looked for lizards until 1305, when
we stopped for lunch. After eating,
we collected our soil sample from this
station. At 1405 we began driving east
toward Rice to see if we could get out
of the wind and perhaps find some
animals along the road. We didn't get
out of the wind, but we did find some
animals. We continued until we were
15 miles east of Dale Dry Lake. At
1700 we stopped looking for lizards and
retraced our route toward home.
