Mayhew 1960 Journal 2. Jan. 28 Dale Dry Lake area, San Bernardino Co., Calif. I failed to mention that we blew a left rear tire just before ~~~ we entered 29 Palms, so had to acquire a new one there. When we prepared camp tonight at 2000, we found one of the cots didn't have any end sticks. All in all, it was a bad day for every- one. We drove 227 miles today. Minimum temp. tonight was 36°F. (2°C.). Jan. 29 We arose at 0800 and ate breakfast. We looked for tracks of lizards again this morning without success. A large number of annuals are just through the ground. I marked out a 1 yard square area & divided it into 9 1-foot square quadrates. Then I counted the annuals in each quadrat. The count was as follows: 35, 29, 76, 51, 43, 32, 84, 74, and 59. The average was 53 plants/ft² After obtaining our soil sample at station IV, we dug out a rodent burrow to see if any animals were present. We traced it out about 15 feet, but found no animals. The greatest depth we followed it was 27" at that depth, the soil temp. was 10.8°C. The soil was quite moist at that depth. We ate lunch on some rocks that over- look the Coycomb Mts. Here we caught 2 Uta stansburiana (107, 1♀) and saw 7 others. These were caught at 1335 & 1340.
