Mojave Desert, San Bernardino Co., Calif.
Frank Aubrey, Walter Mobley + I left UCR
at 1015 on our monthly collecting trip. The
weather was beautiful when we left, but as
we approached Yucca Valley, we could see
a good sized [illegible] cloud bank in the
east. By the time we reached our collecting
site at Dale Dry Lake, the sky was
completely overcast, and the weather was
quite cool for this time of year. We
arrived at Dale Dry Lake at 1345. We
began to look for lizards, in spite of
the weather, at 1355, and continued to look
until 1525. During that time the maximum
air temp. was 25.8°C. We saw a total of 5
Uma scoparia (all adults). We caught 2
of these (1♂; 1♀). We saw + caught 1
Urosaurus graciosa [adult] + 1 Chimactis
occipitalis (imm.). No other reptiles were
seen. It appeared the coolness produced
by the overcast, and the S.W. wind (9-12
mph), tended to keep the animals inactive.
at 1530 we drove east toward Rice to
see if we could get out of the wind
behind the hills. In spite of our efforts,
we were unable to escape the wind. Not
one vertebrate (alive) was seen before we
reached the Riverside - San Bernardino county
drive. However, 2 Masticophis flagellum + 1
Phyllorhynchus decurtatus were found DOR.
We stopped at the county line to cool
