Mayhew 1960 Apr. 2 Journal 20. Mojave Desert, San Bernardino Co., Calif. a lot of Sceloporus occidentalis and Uta stansburiana were active in the middle of the day. We left this area about 1230 and drove into the conifers about 1 mile south of Cedar Springs. All the deciduous trees along the stream lacked leaves. The situation is quite different than a year ago when all of these trees were covered with leaves at this time. Almost no birds were found here either. At 1300 we drove to Hesperia, then began looking for reptiles in Joshua tree woodland. No animals were found active near Hesperia. I took 1/2 of the class through Phelan on our way to Zoojjoy & Saddle- back Buttes. No reptiles were seen on the entire route. We passed through the Phelan area about 1400. A couple of Xantusia vigilis & about 3 Uta stansburiana were seen on Saddleback Buttes about 1530. We started for home, but finally saw a Sceloporus magister sunning itself on a Joshua tree at 1645. Several others were seen, & some captured between then and sunset. (One was captured at sunset). I don't know why they had been inactive earlier. The temp. was still within
