Mojave Desert, San Bernardino Co., Calif.
a lot of Sceloporus occidentalis and
Uta stansburiana were active in the
middle of the day. We left this
area about 1230 and drove into
the conifers about 1 mile south of
Cedar Springs. All the deciduous
trees along the stream lacked
leaves. The situation is quite different
than a year ago when all of these
trees were covered with leaves at
this time. Almost no birds were
found here either. At 1300 we
drove to Hesperia, then began looking
for reptiles in Joshua tree woodland.
No animals were found active near
Hesperia. I took 1/2 of the class through
Phelan on our way to Zoojjoy & Saddle-
back Buttes. No reptiles were seen on
the entire route. We passed through
the Phelan area about 1400. A couple
of Xantusia vigilis & about 3 Uta
stansburiana were seen on Saddleback
Buttes about 1530. We started for
home, but finally saw a Sceloporus
