Mar. 21 Mojave Desert, San Bernardino Co., Calif.
We reached UCR at 2040, after
driving 227 miles today. We drove a
total of 991 miles on the entire trip.
Mar. 28 Deep Canyon area, Riverside Co., Calif.
Walter Moberly, Frank Aubrey & I
left UCR at 0910 in the '52 Chev.
camry-all (1223) for the Coachella Valley.
I had seen 4 Diposaurus israelis
active on March 24th, so we were
trying to get some. There were strong
winds blowing on the desert today,
however, so not many animals were
active. One adult Diposaurus dorsalis
was seen all day (we caught it). The
first Crotaphytus wrighti we've seen
this year was captured today. We
returned to UCR at 1540, after
driving 143 miles today.
April 2 Mojave Desert, San Bernardino Co., Calif.
Frank Aubrey & I left UCR at 0720
with 25 Field Zoology students. We
reached the Mojave River, 3 miles north
of Cedar Springs at 0830. Spring
apparently has not arrived in this
region yet. Few leaves are to be seen
on any deciduous tree. Very few birds
were seen during our stay. The wind
was rather strong, which may have
partly explained the rather small
number of birds seen or heard.
