Mayhew 1960 Journal 18. Mar. 19 Mojave Desert, San Bernardino Co., Calif. We camped at Yates Well at the edge of the dry lake. Minimum temp. tonight was 28°F. We drove 160 miles today. Mar. 20 We arose at 0630 and checked sections on or near Ivanpah Dry Lake. We drove through Desert to Ripon to Ivanpah. Then we went through the New York Mts. again, but turned east toward the Nevada border. We eventually reached Castle Buttes & Indian Spring in the New York Mts. Then we retraced our route to Ivanpah. We drove from there to China, and then to Helloran Springs for gas. After refueling we returned toward China, but camped in Joshua tree woodland a few miles north of China. We drove 14¼ miles today. We camped for the night at 2155. Minimum temp. tonight was 46°F. Mar. 21 We drove toward China this morning, checking several sections of Joshua tree woodland. Before reaching China, however, we turned west and hiked for the lava beds north of the Kelso Mts. After eating lunch in the lava beds, we drove around the Old Dad Mts. toward Baker. This road was in much worse shape than it had been two years ago. It took us over an hour to drive 5 miles. After refueling at Baker, we returned to Riverside.
