Mayhew 1960 Journal 16. Mar. 17 Mojave Desert, San Bernardino Co., Calif. at 0830, Frank Vasek, Frank Aubry & I left UCR for a 5-day trip to investigate land that the University might obtain for desert research. We drove through Little Morongo Valley to 29 Palms, then east past Dale Dry Lake to the Rice area. We checked on a section of sandy land near Rice, then drove north across Darby Dry Lake to Cadiz. After gassing up at Amboy, we drove north to Keego to eat. We spent the night at Kaiser's old Vulcan Mine. Minimum temp. tonight was 42° F. During the night a wild burr owoke us with its braying about 100 yards from our camp. We drove 272 miles today (in #1223 - a 1952 Chev. camp-all). Mar. 18 We left Vulcan Mine & drove east over the edge of the Providence Mts., then turned north along the eastern edge of the Providences. We ate lunch near Granite Well, just N.W. of Wild Horse Canyon. Then we drove east past the Snotto Hills, then N.W. to the southern edge of the New York Mts. Frank Vasek was quite sick by this time, so we drove out to Jorpanah, and ran out of gas about 3 miles from Highway 91. We used our can of white
