Dick Tedford has just returned
from a summer in Australia. He
brought back 2 Amphibolurus pictus
for me in his pocket. They are both
males. They were collected in late
August on Lower Cooper's Creek, 16
miles west of Etadunna Station (on
the Birdsville track) in South
Australia. They were collected from
sand ridges at an elevation of about
100 feet. This location is roughly
20 miles east of Lake Eyre. They
dig shallow burrows in the sand at
the bases of plants. He captured
these by digging them out by hand.
He says Amphibolurus barbatus and A.
reticulatus also occur in these
sand ridges in large numbers, but
A. reticulatus seems to prefer
rockier country. These animals are
being kept in a cage with Uta to
compare them.
