Sept. 12
Glamis area, Imperial Co., Calif.
been heard about 100 yards away
from the Glamis store (on both
sides of the store), but we had
been unable to catch any of
them. Later we caught 2 in a flowing
creek about 3 miles north of Glamis.
Several others were heard, but couldn't
be located. These animals appear to
be some species of Scaphiopus
that emerge when rains in the
Cholates cause these streams
to flow. We also collected 7 Coleonyx
variegatus at this time. In each
case, the animal was on a wet
spot on the road (6 on dirt, 1 on
pavement) that had been left by
the rain (pavement) or by the
receding waters of the flash flood
(dirt). We quit collecting at 2240.
Maximum temp. today was 108°F.,
minimum temp. tonight was 76°F.
Turned out
to be
Scaphiopus
coecchi.
Sept. 13
We arose at 0615. We began
looking for lizards at 0720. We
caught 4 Uma notata, then began
looking for Phrynosoma m'calli along
the road. We looked for P. m'calli
from 0745 to 1105. There was a
great deal of overcast this morning,
so the temp. remained rather low
for some time.
