Mayhew 1960 Journal Jan. 28 Dale Dry Lake area, San Bernardino Co., Calif. This morning at 0845 Frank Aubrey, Fritz Zabel, Mark Kuhn & I left UCR. Just north of San Bernardino we discovered Mark's sleeping bag had blown off the car rack we were using. We retraced our steps without finding it, so I picked up an extra one at home. We finally got underway at 1000. We drove through Hesperia, Lucine Valley to Old Woman Springs. Two lite stevansiana were seen at 1300 in the sun at this location. At the time, the wind was 7-15 mph from the S.E.; the air temp. at 30" was 16.5°C; at 1cm. it was 18.0°C.; soil surface temp. was 26.0°C., relative humidity was 37%. One was setting on the windward side of a rock pile in the sun. We found a fine Joshua Tree woodland near Giant Rock. It should be quite good for Sceloporus magister. It is 11 miles north of the junction of Old Woman Springs Road and 29 Palms Road (between Joshua Tree and Yucca Valley). We reached Dale Dry Lake at 1620, then climbed one of the low hills to the S.E. No Uma scoparia tracks (or any other reptile tracks) could be found, although numerous bird & mammal tracks) were visible. It appears that all the reptiles are currently hibernating here.
