Mayhew 1961 Journal 68. Aug. 21 Glamis area, Imperial Co., Calif. flowed across the Anso-Glamis road and into the east side of the dunes. Mr. Van der Poel in the glamis Store told us that some years there are a couple of big lakes (one about 4 miles south of Anso, the other about 6-7 miles south of Glamis) & several smaller lakes against the east side of the dunes after several heavy rains have fallen in the Chocolates. He said this occurred roughly once every 10 years. The biggest lakes have been 12 feet deep some years and cover considerable area. We drove to Anso and checked a wash about 1 mile west of there. Grass was quite lush & about 10 inches high over much of the flat land close to the dunes. Palo verde & ironwood trees were in full leaf. There was evidence of water having stood 18" or 2 feet deep in spots recently. All in all, things looked quite lush right up to the edge of the dunes.
