Glamis area, Imperial Co., Calif.
flowed across the Anso-Glamis
road and into the east side of
the dunes. Mr. Van der Poel in the
glamis Store told us that some
years there are a couple of big
lakes (one about 4 miles south of
Anso, the other about 6-7 miles
south of Glamis) & several smaller
lakes against the east side
of the dunes after several heavy
rains have fallen in the Chocolates.
He said this occurred roughly once
every 10 years. The biggest lakes
have been 12 feet deep some years
and cover considerable area. We
drove to Anso and checked a wash
about 1 mile west of there. Grass
was quite lush & about 10 inches
high over much of the flat land
close to the dunes. Palo verde &
ironwood trees were in full leaf.
There was evidence of water having
stood 18" or 2 feet deep in spots
recently. All in all, things looked
quite lush right up to the edge
of the dunes. We didn't have time
to examine the areas where the large
lakes are formed, since we wanted
to check over some habitat east of
