about 0400. I slept in the front
seat of the carry-all & Walt slept
in the second seat. We arose at
0715 & finished checking the traps
while we waited for the weather to
warm up sufficiently for lizards
to get active. We finally collected enough
adult Uma for a sample, so we left
for home at 1300. We checked the
rain gauge at Mrs. Joe De Salliera
on the way (4.7 miles from soil sampling
site). We found 0.86 inches of rain fell
this morning & last night. We learned
that 29 Palma had received over 2 inches
of rain in 4 hours. The soil was
moist to a depth of 10 inches at
De Salliera. We reached UCR at 1600
after a total trip of 268 miles. We
brought back 119 animals of 4 species:
Urosaurus graciosa - 1 (Dale)
Uma scoparia - 59 (18 adult, 41 young) (immature)
Uma inornata - 18 (11 adult, 7 young)
Dipsosaurus dorsalis - 41 (1-Dale; 2-Palm Springs;
38-Palm Desert [18 ad, 8 ad?,
11 immature, 1 juvenile]).
Some of the young will be kept in the
laboratory (the smallest ones), but the
remainder will be toe-clipped, measured
& returned to Dale & "Granddaddy Dune";
