Mayhew 1961 Journal 62. Aug. 11 Glamis area, Imperial Co., Calif. Ed Eberle & Bill Truexell were going to the dunes tonight, so I decided to go down this afternoon in the cany-all. I left UCR at 1445 and drove to Ocotillo Wells by way of Warner's Hot Springs. I reached Ocotillo Wells at 1700. At that time the air temp.(36") was 40.0°C. I drove the road south of Ocotillo Wells very slowly, looking for Phrynosoma m'celli, since we had found them here in the past. The area is the driest I have ever seen it; Few Larrea have green leaves. No P. m'celli were seen going or coming on this road. However, 6 Callisaurus draconoides were seen between 1700 and 1720, 11 were seen by 1820. No other reptiles were seen. Sun down occurred at 1820, at that time the air temp.(36") was 38.6°C., soil surface temp. was 40.6°C. At that time I headed for the Algodones Dunes, which I reached at 2030. The air temp.(36") was 35.0°C. I night collected between the Highline Canal & Glamis until 0005, when Ed & Bill arrived. I drove 248 miles today. Minimum temp. tonight was 82°F. I drove 65 miles while night collecting. Aug 12 We arose at 0520. I began looking for lizards (especially Phrynosoma m'celli)
