July 11 Glamis area, Imperial Co., Calif.
on soil sample, we stayed in the canal until lunch time, then ate at the Glamis store. After lunch we slept beneath the bridge over the Coachella Canal. We looked for Uma notata in the dunes from 1800 to 1910 (sundown-1850). We were rather successful this time, but the flies drove us frantic. We night collected from 2030 to 2145. We saw 2 Crotalus cerastes and caught 1 juvenile Coleonyx variegatus - our 1st this year. No adult Coleonyx were seen. The air temp. (30") held at about 91°F. during the entire night collecting trips, (We drove 28 miles tonight.) The maximum temp. that we recorded today was 111°F., the lowest tonight was 83°F.
July 12 We arose at 0545 when the wind & sand drove us off the top of the big dune. We looked for Phrynosoma wicelli from 0600 to 0630 as we drove to the Highline Canal. There was no sign of any lizards. At this time it was 90% overcast, SE wind at 8-10 mph., air temp. (30") of 84°F. We left the canal at 0705 and reached UCR at 1015. We had to return to
