June 19
Palm Springs area, Riverside Co., Calif.
So, we drove to 1000 Palms (collecting 4 Phrynosoma platyrhinos along the way),
then along Ramon Road to Date Palm Dr. & into Palm Springs Panorama. We found a few more Uma inornata here (3 killed on the road), but not many more. One adult Uma or (108mm. S-V-length) was found that had starved to death - it was nothing but skin & bones. We passed through the Panorama to Vista Chino Drive, looking for lizards. By this time several Dipsosaurus dorsalis were seen. We collected Dipsosaurus along Vista Chino until 1100 when no more animals were seen. By this time the air temp. (30") was 40.0°C. We weighted, measured, & toe-clipped 3 juvenil Dipsosaurus dorsalis & 10 immature Uma inornata as well as 1 recaptured Uma at Lloyd Tevis' house. Then these were released at "Granddaddy June" when we stopped to get a soil sample. All of the areas looked very desiccated at this time. We returned to UCR at 14:45 with the following animals:
Uma inornata - 8 (5?,3?)
Dipsosaurus dorsalis - #21
Urosaurus graciosus - 2(?)
Phrynosoma platyrhinos - 4 (2?,2?)
(not a very good day's work)
we drove 148 miles.
