Dale Dry Lake, San Bernardino Co., Cal.f.
at 0515 Walt Mobely & I left UCR
for Dale. We arrived at our collecting
site at 0730, and found to our
surprise that most of the animals
had returned underground by then.
The air temp. (30") at that time was 36.0°C.
Nevertheless, we looked for lizards from
0730 to 0930, then we drove up Iron
Age Mine Road to look for Sauromalus
obesus. We saw no adult Sauromalus,
but we caught one of two young animals
that we saw near the mine. We just
looking for lizards at 1000, then
checked 7 of the traps we have set
near the old campsite. One adult
Citelius [illegible] teticandus & one
dead baby C. tetricandus were in one
trap, along with several beetles. After
we gathered our soil sample, we drove
to 29 Palms to try to cool off a bit
(max. temp. today - 110°F. We returned to Dale
about 1630, but it was still so hot
no animals were active (air temp. [30°]
was 108°F. at 1630). We checked the
other 7 traps & looked for lizards
until sundown, but few of them
were active. We took 6 Uina scaparia
from traps (1 adult) as well as 3 Chioractis
occipitalis (2 dead). In fact, the adult
