June 7
5 mi. W. of Glamis, Imperial Co., Calif.
the air temp (30") was 36.2°C. and the
black-top at the edge of the pavement
was 61.0°C. Three Callisaurus draconoides
were seen on the black-top between 1455
and 1500. At 1545 a Phrynosoma m'calli
was seen on the road. at that time
the air temp. (30") was 36.4°C., the temp. of
the black-top was 52.5°C. The animal
was quite active and it escaped when
a large gravel truck passed close by.
However, 3 live P. m'calli were captured
during the afternoon, & 4 dead ones
were seen on the road. Two of these
were in good enough condition to be
saved. Steve & Walt looked for Uma
notate in the dunes from 1645 until
sundown (1800). They were able to
capture about 20, most of which were
young ones, for growth data. We
began night collecting at 1950. We
made one round trip from the top of
the big dune to Glamis, through to
the Highline Canal, back to Glamis,
then to the top of the big dune (2.8
miles). This took us until 2235, and
during this time we caught 22 Coleonyx
variegatus & 1 Chionactis occipitalis (saw
2 Chionactis DOR). We found them (Coleonyx)
considerably more abundant this month than
last. We drove 136 miles today.
