June 4
Northern Sonora, Mexico
Everything went fine until Walt
killed the engine. Then the starter
wouldn't budge. We tried to rock it
loose without success. Finally, after
much digging, pushing, & crossing, we
jacked up the right rear wheel &
spun it to act like a crank. The
motor started & we lost no time
getting back onto the pavement. We
stopped by some sand next to the
road & caught 5 Uma notata about
sundown. After sundown we night
collected the road back to San Luis
(77 miles). We began looking for
animals at 1930 and looked until
2345. We caught 8 Colonyx variegatus
and 1 Trimorphodon lambda. We also
saw 4 Crotalus cerastes & 1 Crotalus
scutulatus (DOR). We crossed the border
into Arizona at San Luis, then
camped about 10 miles east of Yuma.
We drove 288 miles today.
June 5
Southwestern Arizona
We drove east from our campsite on
Highway 80 until we reached the Gila Mts.
We stopped to look for lizards along
the road. We were able to capture 3
Sauromalus obesus, 2 Crotaphytus collaris
& 1 Uta stansburiana (all the animals we
